NORTH HAVEN — The month of July marked a large change for southern Connecticut residents as the Rave Cinema building in North Haven was knocked down to make room for a new theater.
Cinemark purchased Rave Motion Pictures in 2013.
A brand new movie theater with 14 huge floor-to-ceiling screens was built behind the old Rave theater in the early months of 2015, while the Rave theater remained in business.
In July 2015, the Rave theater, formerly owned by Showcase Cinemas, was demolished — leading to some nostalgic moments for teens (and former teens) from North Haven, Hamden and surrounding areas, who frequented the theater.
The new theater opened with its first public showings at 1 p.m. Thursday July 23, 2015.
These photos were taken at the time of the grand opening, while piles of rubble remained just feet in front of the building.
The new Cinemark theater opened while debris from the old theater still lay strewn around the parking lot.
The new theater includes a self-serve concession stand, and recliners for all seats of the 14 theaters.
