Marcus Harun, a Hamden, Conn.-based multimedia journalist and recent Quinnipiac University graduate, earned two awards at the 2014 Boston/New England Emmy Awards Gala on Saturday, June 7 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place.
Harun, 22, earned two National Academy of Arts and Sciences Boston/New England Chapter 2014 College/University Awards for Excellence. The awards are also known as “The College Emmys.” Here is the link to the winners list on the Emmy website.
At the ceremony honoring the best news teams in New England television news last Saturday, Harun received two plaques for news reports he produced in 2013.
The first award is for Excellence in General Assignment Light News Reporting for a segment he produced and anchored on his web series “Marcus Harun Reports.” The segment featured an interview with former ABC World News anchor Charles Gibson about his experience anchoring live coverage during the devastating 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001. Harun shares this award with his friend and colleague Johan Corilla who directed photography for the interview.
The second award is for Excellence in Animation/Graphics/Special Effects for his motion info-graphic report about the congressional spending of U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.). He investigated how Sen. Blumenthal spent nearly $5 million in his first two years in office.
The Academy also nominated Harun’s report about Drug Resistant Bacteria for Excellence in the General Assignment Serious News Reporting category. Harun interviewed to a woman who had a drug resistant infection MRSA and survived.
Harun says he is very grateful for the awards, which are the highest honor broadcast journalists can receive. He shared his thoughts in a blog post on his website.
Harun just began his first professional job as a freelance associate producer at News 12 Connecticut in Norwalk, Conn. He previously interned for five different news organizations, including NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, NBC Owned TV Stations, WTNH-TV, WTIC-TV and WQUN-AM. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with his undergraduate broadcast journalism degree from Quinnipiac University in May, 2014. He is continuing his studies in the fast track MBA graduate program at Quinnipiac, and is set to graduate with his masters in May, 2015.
